How can I test the speed of my DSL Internet?

Testing the speed of your DSL connection by visiting one of the popular web site bandwidth meters is not a truly accurate representation of your Internet's bandwidth. There are far too many uncontrollable variables between your computer and the web server that hosts the bandwidth meter, such as the backbone of the Internet. To accurately test the speed of your DSL Internet, you'll need to do a little work.

Disconnect any additional computers from your local network. Connect one single computer directly to your DSL Modem or network router (bypass any firewall or proxy server). Now test your speed by clicking on one of the following buttons. This will download a test file. Since this server is on our network, you are truly testing only the speed of your DSL Internet between your computer and our network.

When determining if your speed is within acceptable limits, keep the following in mind:
it is normal to see about a 15% loss in bandwidth due to overhead traffic from your computer, and most download speeds are reported in kilobytes per second while Internet connection speeds are reported in kilobits per second (eight bits equals one byte).

This is not an accurate test, rather it will give you an estimate of your connection speed to determine if you are having any trouble.
